AFFIRMING THE RIGHTS OF LGBTQ+ PERSONS AND CELEBRATING OUR SHARED DIVERSITIES
WHEREAS, LGBTQ+ people exist in all cultures, all classes, all families, all religions and all ethnicities and are actively welcomed in Yellow Springs as codified in our Village Values; and,
WHEREAS, when those of us empowered to believe in the worth of our lives and voices use our voices to challenge the discrimination and diminishment of all disempowered people, we lift up all LGBTQ+ people and strengthen our community; and,
WHEREAS, the concept of PRIDE is rooted in a disgusting history of relentless shaming for what people are, who they are and whom they love, and the expression of PRIDE is essential to solidifying belief in and respect for LGBTQ+ people’s worth as a community and as individuals; and,
WHEREAS, we wish to recognize that LGBTQ+ persons significantly contribute to their communities, and we raise ourselves by raising all disempowered, underrepresented and oppressed people; and,
WHEREAS, LGBTQ+ people in the United States continue to fight for equal treatment, dignity and respect, and we must join together to overcome current threats from homo/transphobic legislators; and,
WHEREAS, “Be Yourself Here” truly embodies the year-round YS Pride vibe, and the Village of Yellow Springs is and will continue to be a safe, creative, inspiring and uplifting space.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by Council for the Village of Yellow Springs that:
Section 1. Village Council takes PRIDE in the diversity of our community and commits to ensuring the equal treatment and protection of all Villagers & Visitors, regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, gender expression or identity, ethnicity, economic status, mental/physical ability or religious affiliation.
Section 2. Village Council encourages the celebration of June 24-30 as YS Pride Week to recognize the rich cultural and societal contributions of the LGBTQ+ community and the progress made in the ongoing fight for justice, equality and inclusion, calling on each of us to recommit ourselves to confronting hatred and bigotry in all its forms.
